Autumn Leaves of Glory – Finished Quilt

January 27, 2008 11:21 pm by Ebony in Finished Quilts

Delivery & installation! I really love how this piece turned out, and it’s really striking in this room. Each panel has a rod pocket so the art could be suspended from the rod and hide the hardware. It took the better part of 2 hours to get it hung just right, and we had to move the bed 4 inches to get everything centered. What I love about this picture is how close my artist rendering was to the final piece. I love being able to show my clients what they are going to get in advance. The brown drapes were the original inspiration for the wall hanging, and although I hadn’t seen them, I was able to get a near-perfect match in the brown. The client later sent me a beautiful card to tell me how much he loves this piece. That’s all folks!

Autumn Leaves of Glory – Finishing Update

The hand work is progressing; there won’t be any more photos until delivery, as my design wall is backed with felt & it’s leaving little white fuzzies all over the panels. I’ve gone through an entire roll of sticky lint remover trying to keep them dust free. I had to stop working on this project for a bit to finish Colorado Winter. That’s all folks!

Autumn Leaves of Glory – Finishing

Here, all the panels are assembled, and the remaining work to be done is by hand. I love doing binding by hand, and it’s something that I do on 95% of the quilts I make. The exception to this is on the ready-made baby quilts – binding by machine keeps them more affordable. The remaining panels proceeded in much the same way, although I had a little scare when I ran out of black fabric. Black is one of those colors that is impossible to match, especially if you don’t know where you got it or who manufactured it. Thankfully, when I purchase solid fabrics, I only buy from one particular line at one specific store. Unfortunately, I needed black around the one holiday where it is nowhere to be had: Halloween! It took 3 trips before I could secure it, and I had to send a store employee to the storeroom to look for it. Hence the month-long delay. My lesson from this is to start buying black by the bolt, which I did, so this doesn’t happen again. That’s all folks!

Autumn Leaves of Glory – Binding

Panel #1 is near completion – here it is shown squared up, with the binding applied. Rather than have a border and binding, this piece just has a wide 1″ binding with mitered corners… Here is Panel #1 – finished! The pink is a little brighter than originally intended, but overall I’m pleased with how the panel turned out. This panel is 19″ x 39″. That’s all folks!

Autumn Leaves of Glory – Piecing & Assembly

October 26, 2007 10:12 pm by Ebony in Uncategorized

The fabrics are prepared – pressed, squared, cut into strips, and sewn together in sequence into a continuous tube. The tube is then squared, and ready to begin cutting for the quilt top. Sewing these strips together is very challenging, as they are cut on the cross-grain across the entire fabric width, and have a tendency to stretch as they are sewn together. This has to be compensated for downstream, so it’s best to get it right the first time. These strips are 2 1/8″ wide so they finish at 1 5/8″. The Bargello pattern requires a lot of patience & preparation up front – but it pays off in the end. The batting & backing are prepared – this quilt top is pieced & quilted in one step. The batting used is a thin flannel, which helps to reduce bulk and ensure accuracy. The back is a solid black. Incidentally, this pattern requires some un-sewing, but I don’t mind as much when it’s by design rather than as part of a mistake. (As a side note, I’d hoped to use my brand new labels on this project, but due to the flannel, the fiber content is different than what is printed on the labels.) That’s all folks!
