Butterfly Dreams – Extras & Label

November 30, 2008 3:55 pm by Ebony in Uncategorized

I took the opportunity to create some “extras” to go along with the quilt. I made several matching baby bibs from the leftover scraps from the fabric. These were really fun to make! These days, I print all my labels to fabric instead of writing them out by hand. I am able to get more text on them, and they come out looking professional and neat. (I have blacked out the personal identifying information on the label.) The words around the label are the words that are quilted into the borders. On this particular label, the date represents the day on which the quilt will be presented, not the day it was finished. I do that when I happen to know in advance the particular date of the gift. The quilt itself is almost done – the binding is the last thing to be done, which I prefer to hand quilt. After that, I will attach the label, inspect the quilt, and package it for delivery. That’s all folks!

Butterfly Dreams – Quilting Motif

October 19, 2008 2:42 pm by Ebony in Uncategorized

For this quilt, I decided to use a square spiral for the log cabin blocks, and a butterfly motif for the butterfly blocks: In the borders, I free-motion quilted words like “precious daughter,” “Laughter”, “love”, etc. Here is a closeup of the word “gift”: My only regret with this quilting is that I didn’t quilt in a darker color so the words were more legible, but perhaps it is for the best – it can be a secret that the quilt reveals over time. However, I am going to incorporate this text into the label to preserve it. That’s all folks!

Butterfly Dreams – Quilt Assembly

October 18, 2008 2:37 pm by Ebony in Uncategorized

All the blocks are assembled now, so it is time to sew them together. The setting of this quilt makes it wider than it is tall – sashing and multiple borders will bring it to the correct size. First, the blocks are assembled into columns (instead of the traditional rows): Then a set of sashing strips was added to connect the interior: Now the quilt top is done & basted, ready for quilting. That’s all folks!

Butterfly Dreams – Piecing & Layout

October 12, 2008 2:27 pm by Ebony in Uncategorized

The block foundations were printed & separated, and the fabrics were cut slightly larger than the foundation pieces to speed construction. The blocks go together fairly quickly, although I did have several hours of “unsewing” after aligning the bottom wings of the butterflies incorrectly. The lesson in all this is to finish a single block first (with a basting stitch) to make sure it is correct before chain-piecing the entire set of blocks! That’s all folks!
