Sailing, Sailing – Finished Quilt

January 18, 2009 3:39 am by Ebony in Finished Quilts

Here is the finished quilt! Here is the quilt back: Here is the label: There was a slight delay in attaching the label to the quilt, as the date of the gift delivery changed, and I had to correct a misspelled name (how embarrassing, but I was told that one of the person’s parents misspelled her name on the birth certificate so I don’t feel so badly now!) To add a little interest & mystery to this quilt, I have to fold & package it in a non-traditional way. I folded the quilt so that only the center medallion shows: Then, I wrapped the quilt in sturdy cardboard & then wrapped it in gift wrap. There is no way the recipient will guess that there is a quilt inside! Happy quilting!

Sailing, Sailing – Binding

I have finished the quilting for this quilt! Time for squaring up and binding! I probably won’t take pictures of the binding – not much to see since I’m using the same fabric as the border & the backing. Happy quilting!

Sailing, Sailing – Quilting

I have decided to do custom quilt patterns in each of the block centers, but for the large sailboat, I wanted to do something special. In the upper part of the sailboat block, I used a large meandering design meant to evoke clouds. I had to be very careful not to stitch the flag down while I was doing this! In the bottom half of the sailboat block, I added quilting to resemble waves in the water. I think it turned out pretty well: In the corner medallions, I chose a scroll-type design that contrasts against the straight lines in the block: Since the border fabric is meant to represent water, I think I will repeat the wave design there too. Happy quilting!

Sailing, Sailing – Basting

November 11, 2008 3:29 am by Ebony in Uncategorized

I finished the backing for this quilt, which is the same fabric as the borders. I did have to do some creative piecing to get the back to be the right size, but the seams are virtually invisible. The quilt top, batting, and backing are ready for basting! I haven’t yet selected the quilting pattern but I’m sure something will come to me… Happy quilting!

Sailing, Sailing – More Piecing

November 3, 2008 3:25 am by Ebony in Uncategorized

I managed to finish all the boats and the cutting for the remaining blocks. After the sailboats, the rest of the quilt came together pretty quickly. I did learn a lesson while constructing this though: always do ONE complete block first when dealing with an unfamiliar pattern. Imagine my dismay to learn that I lined up one of the paper pieced blocks incorrectly, and after making 8 of them, I didn’t learn of my mistake until I pressed them later. Lots more unstitching… Happy quilting!

Sailing, Sailing – Piecing

October 26, 2008 1:07 am by Ebony in Uncategorized

Most of the blocks in this quilt need to be paper-pieced, due to the small scale and unusual angles. The sailboats in particular needed careful piecing, and they finished at 6″x6″. The larger sailboat which is the center medallion for this quilt was to finish at 21″ square; this was too large for me to paper piece, so I did a lot of eyeballing, cutting, stitching, unstitching, recutting, and restitching until I got it right. I don’t do enough quilts with triangles and various other angles to be really skilled at getting it right the first time, but once I figured it out, the large sailboat & sashing blocks came out perfectly: Phew! That’s enough for today. Happy quilting!

Update on Muslim/Pakistani Quilt

October 20, 2008 1:48 pm by Ebony in Uncategorized

After doing a bit of detective work, I found out that the couple does not have a theme for their nursery, and are not particularly religious. So I decided to go with a “safe” theme of sailboats for their quilt: This design is going to be a little bit tricky because I free-hand drew the sailboats, so they will be a little challenging to assemble. I will probably use paper piecing for the smaller boats since they are only about 6″ wide, but the central motif is too large to print a reliable foundation – it’s about 22″ square. Adding to the challenge is fitting this centerpiece within the sashing correctly. That’s all folks!

Pakistani or Muslim Quilt for First-Born Son

October 12, 2008 5:22 pm by Ebony in Uncategorized

I recently was asked by a client to make a quilt for them to give to a couple who are having a baby. At the end of the meeting, the client says, “By the way, it’s their first-born son, they are Muslim & originally from Pakistan, so it would be nice if you could acknowledge that somehow in the quilt. I don’t know what you’d do though – good luck.” So… I openly admit to being completely ignorant about how I would go about incorporating all of that. So I am asking you guys… if you are Pakistani, Muslim, or know someone who is, can you please help me with some ideas on how I would go about acknowledging these items? For example, are there any special traditions or ceremonies for first-born sons? Any special colors or symbols? Even a phrase or scripture that I could incorporate into the label? That’s all folks!
